Kapfenstein Castle
In the middle of the vineyards.
History
Decay and recovery.

Kapfenstein Castle is located in the Styrian "Vulkanland",  far to the southeast of Styria. It was built from the 10th to the 11th century by the Kapfenstein family as a border fortress against the Magyars. The castle defied countless attacks by the Huns, Turks and Kurucs, experienced times of decay and reconstruction and several changes of ownership. Since 1918, the castle and its lands have been owned by the Winkler-Hermaden family. During World War II, the castle was plundered and its agricultural holdings were destroyed.

Wine and enjoyment.

After reconstruction, a tavern was opened in the castle in the late 1940's. In the 60's, it was converted into a restaurant and hotel. Today, three generations lovingly take care of the castle hotel, kitchen and garden. Kapfenstein Castle sits amid 40 hectares of vineyards that are cultivated organically on volcanic soils by the Winkler-Hermaden Winery. Through meticulous selection of grapes during harvest, the wines reflect the typicality of the soil and the respective grape varieties.
Hotel & Restaurant
A place to enjoy and relax.

Today, the former fortress houses a cosy family hotel and restaurant that invites you to enjoy the romantic atmosphere, the silence, and the chef's culinary skill. Here is a good place to rest but also to celebrate. Sixteen individual guest rooms, lovingly furnished with old furniture, but with modern comfort, invite you to stay a while. Each one has its own special flair. There is no room without a small, romantic niche somewhere.

Staying at Kapfenstein Castle is always attractive. Whoever comes here has found a true place of enjoyment. Depending on the season and the current offer of the region, there is a 4- to 6-course gourmet menu, accompanied by the best wines from the family-owned winery.

A vineyard picnic -- bookable from mid-April to mid-October, from Thursday to Sunday. Choose from a vegetarian option, fried chicken, or the Kapfenstein Castle picnic basket with cold specialties. More information can be found here.

Winkler-Hermaden Winery
Wines with a family history.

At the Winkler-Hermaden Winery, 40 hectares of vineyards are organically cultivated on volcanic soils. Half of the vineyards, some of which are very old,  are used for the production of strong red wines, such as OLIVIN. As for white wines, great emphasis is placed on pronounced aromas and attempts to work out the influence of the soil, the climate and the signature of the winery. In order to emphasize this regional emphasis, we select only the best oak wood from our own forests for the barrels.
