Varaždin Castle
The Cultural and Historical Department of the Varaždin Municipal Museum is located in Varaždin Castle in the old city center. It is the most important Gothic-Renaissance complex of monuments in Varaždin, built between the 14th and 17th centuries. It served historically as the seat of the feudal administration. In 1925, the Municipality of Varaždin purchased the castle from the Counts of Erdödy and used it to house the newly formed Varaždin City Museum with its rich cultural and historical collections.

Due to its impressive structural characteristics, the castle is in itself is a museum of architecture, additionally enriched by some 1100 most interesting pieces from the museum's collections. Among those on display are items from the fine and applied arts, grouped into units which illustrate historical styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism, Empire, Biedermeier, Historicism and Secession. Within the confines of the castle there is also the royal chapel of St. Lawrence and its attached sacristy.

Other collections and units are witnesses to the city's rich social, economical, political and cultural life through the ages: guilds, glass, ceramics and watch collection, targets, weapons and firearms, historical portraits, and the Culture of Clothing Exhibit, which portrays fashion and clothing from the past.
