Kapfenstein Castle
In the middle of the vineyards.
History
Decay and recovery.

Kapfenstein Castle is located in the styrian "Vulkanland", far to the southeast of Styria. It was built from the 10th to the 11th century by the Kapfenstein family as a border fortress against the magyars. The castle defied countless attacks by the huns, turks and kuruc, experienced times of decay and reconstruction and several changes of ownership. Since 1918, the castle and its estates have been owned by the Winkler family of Hermaden. During World War II. the castle was plundered and its agricultural holdings were destroyed.

Wine and enjoyment.

After reconstruction, a tavern was opened in the castle in the late 1940s. In the 60s, the conversion into a restaurant and hotel took place. Today, three generations lovingly take care of the castle hotel, kitchen and garden. Around the Kapfenstein Castle, 40 hectares of vineyards are cultivated on volcanic soils in the winery Winkler-Hermaden, in a biological-organic way. Through the most accurate selection of grapes during the harvest, the wines receive the typicality of the soil and the respective grape varieties.
Hotel & Restaurant
A place to enjoy and relax.

Today, the former fortress with a cosy family hotel and restaurant invites you to enjoy the romantic atmosphere, the silence the culinary experience and to rest but also to celebrate. 16 individual guest rooms, lovingly furnished with old furniture, but with modern comfort, invite you to linger. Each one has its own special flair. There is no room without a small, romantic niche somewhere.

Living at Kapfenstein Castle is always attractive. Whoever comes here has found a true place to enjoy. Depending on the season and the current offer of the region, there is a 4- to 6-course gourmet menu, accompanied by the best wines from the family-owned winery.
Winery Winkler-Hermaden
Wines with family history.

At the Winkler-Hermaden winery, 40 hectares of vineyards are cultivated on volcanic soils in a biological-organic way. Half of the partly very old vineyards are used for the production of strong red wines, such as OLIVIN. In the case of white wines, great emphasis is placed on pronounced aromas and attempts to work out the influence of the soil, the climate and the signature of the winery. In order to emphasize the regional understanding, we select only the best oak wood from the own forests for the barrels.
