Successful breed for 200 years
As the only stud in Austria the Lipizzan stud has the task to breed those Lipizzaner stallions performing in the world famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
Already around 1100, the place is mentioned for the first time and was used as a domain of the monastery St. Lambrecht located in upper Styria, until 1796. The abbots of this venerable Benedictine monastery also build the splendid early Baroque "Piber Castle" with its beautiful arcade courtyard.
Emperor Joseph II decreed the transfer of the domain into state ownership during the temporary secularization of the monastery St. Lambrecht in 1796. Two years later, in 1798, the use was determined as a state stud. So for over 200 years horses have been bred here with great success.
In 1920, the precious Lipizzan herd of the old imperial court stud, which remained in Austria after the First World War, was transferred to Piber. The Lipizzaner breed in Piber builds on the former imperial farm stud Lipica and continues to pursue the breeding goal - to breed the best Lipizzaner stallions who come to Vienna at the Spanish Riding School for training.
365 days worth a visit
During farm visits, carriage rides or summer holidays on the alpine pastures the "imperial gray horses" can be admired in all their facets. In the show smiths you look over our blacksmith's shoulder and in the museum you will learn everything about the history of our Lipizzaners. For children, the practice area, the children's adventure trail and the adventure playground are a great attraction. Also experience our foals, who spend their first months at the side of their mothers. So come and let the knowledge about the white horses be conveyed to you in a very entertaining way!
